John K. Bade Memorial Research Hour

From May 1971 to March 2008, Bock Laboratories was fortunate to have John Bade as building manager. John’s reach went well beyond brick and mortar, in that he had major and lasting impacts on the careers of many in Bock Labs, ranging from undergraduates and graduate students to postdoctoral fellows and faculty. John cared greatly about Bock Labs and all its occupants. He was always there to fix any problem and offered his solutions and did his work with great humor and enthusiasm. John believed that education was fundamental to our mission and was an outstanding advocate of both research and education. Trained as an engineer, John loved and understood the science being pursued in Bock Labs and pursued regular chats with the scientists.

The Bade Research Hour is held in John’s honor. It consists of a series of career talks where senior scientists and other colleagues from the Bock Labs community present their own career journeys. The format is an informal 15-20 min talk about an individual’s career in research, how they got to their current position, brief lay summary of their current research, and lots of time for questions for the speaker. This will be followed by social time and informal conversations with refreshments. All our Bock Labs researchers and support staff are encouraged to attend.
